10 Ways to Make Your “Most Popular Posts” More Popular

blogging
No matter how long you have been blogging, some of your posts will be always more popular than others. These posts tend to rank higher on Google and have more social shares and links from other websites.
So the question is, how do you get more traffic to these popular posts? If people already like them, you should be able to make them more popular, right?
Here are 10 ways to make your most popular posts more popular:

Update them frequently

Eventually, even your most popular posts will decrease in popularity unless you update them. For example, this post on leveraging Instagram—written in 2012—received just 27,419 visitors over the past 30 days.
traffic down
Because I haven’t updated the post since 2012, it has become slightly outdated and is driving less traffic now than it did in its earlier days. For instance, in August of 2013 the post received 121,550 visitors.
traffic up
The views from the last month represent a 77% drop in traffic. If I update the post and make the content more Instagram-ready, my traffic would go back up.
I update my blog post on business quotes a few times a year by replacing the quotes that everyone has already seen with new ones. That article was written in 2009, and it still consistently gets over 10,000 visitors a month.
Why? Because the article is still relevant; the bounce rate on the page remains low; and I continually update the page.

Link to your popular posts within your sidebar

Have you noticed that I link to my most popular posts within my sidebar?
popular posts
I link to my best posts within my sidebar, featuring those that rank most popular overall and those that are tending now. Not only is this area highly clicked on, but all of these posts tend to rank well due to the fact that I link to them throughout my website.
Just Google terms like “online marketing.” You should see Quick Sprout ranking on page 1 at the 3rd spot.
online marketing
By linking to your most popular posts within your sidebar, you should receive more clicks to them and increase your overall rankings. Just make sure you don’t spam the links with rich anchor text.

Add email opt-ins within the post

Your most popular posts get traffic, so why not have them help you generate more traffic? By adding an email opt-in to your posts, you’ll gain more email subscribers. This way, every time you publish new blog posts, you can notify all the people on your email list.
To maximize the number of emails you are collecting, the email opt-in offer needs to be relevant to the blog post. The difference in conversions is huge.
For example, Kim Roach published a blog post on the best Fiverr gigs of 2014, in which she broke down the 10 best gigs. Towards the bottom of the post, she added a call to action, inviting people to give their email addresses in exchange for an additional 10 gigs she showcased in her PDF file.
fiverr
By creating a relevant offer, she was able to increase her opt-in rate from 0.54% to 4.82%. That’s a 785% increase.

Add your most popular posts to your drip campaigns

You should consider linking to your most popular posts within your email drip campaigns. Why? People must be liking them for a reason…which is why these posts get shared more often and receive more search traffic than others.
By linking to them within your email drip campaigns, you’ll drive more eyeballs to them. This will help increase the number of social shares and the number of sites that link back to these articles.
Your email subscribers are the most loyal readers you’ll have. They are more likely to read, comment on, and share your articles via the social web. For this reason, you should consider adding your most popular posts to your email drip sequence.

Reference them within your blog

Are you cross-linking enough? When you are writing posts, you should consider linking back to your most popular posts. You should avoid shoving in links just to increase your traffic, but if it makes sense for your readers, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t link to your older posts.
When you are linking to your most popular posts, one thing you’ll want to avoid is using rich anchor text.
For example, if you want one of your posts to rank for “online marketing,” you wouldn’t want to continually link to that post by using the phrase “online marketing.” Instead, you want to use phrases that are natural and make sense.
In addition to that, you can consider creating a “Get Started” page.
get started
The screenshot above is an example of a “Get Started” page on Smart Passive Income. These pages are extremely popular as long as you add them to your main blog navigation. Within that page, you should add links to your most popular posts.

Create a content gate

We did a test a few years ago on Kimberly Snyder’s recipe pages since they tended to be some of the most popular pages on her blog. We took this page and added a content gate.
content gate
You were able to see the infographic above on that page, but the content below the infographic was blocked off unless you put in your email address. The website has been redesigned since, but the feature was effective while it was part of the page.
The page generated an extra 400 to 600 emails a day, and the bounce rate didn’t change at all.
If you are going to block off a portion of your content, make sure you give people an option to close the sign-up window and see the content without first providing an email address. This way, you won’t tick off your readers who aren’t immediately interested in opting in.
content gate social
You can also do the same thing by requesting social shares instead of emails like in the image above.

Repurpose your content

There is a reason why your most popular content is “popular.” Have you thought about repurposing it in different formats?
We do this all the time at KISSmetrics by turning our best posts into infographics. Heck, we even take other people’s best posts and turn them into infographics.
We took a few of Dan Zarrella’s posts that contained social media stats and turned them into three infographics. Here is an example of one of them.
What’s interesting is that our infographics probably received more traffic than his original posts. This not only shows you the power of infographics but also illustrates why you should consider repurposing your content in different formats. From infographics to YouTube videos and Slideshare presentations, the possibilities are endless.
If you want to learn how to create infographics, you can watch this video and read this post.

Syndicate your content

Do you want more exposure? Have you thought about republishing your popular posts on other blogs?
I do this all the time with Quick Sprout by allowing Search Engine Journal to take posts from my blog, word for word. This benefits me because it drives more traffic back to my blog and brings in additional exposure.
When you republish your articles, make sure the blogs taking your content use a rel=canonical tag, which tells search engines that the original article was first published on your website. This way, you will transfer all search engine juice back to your site. If you don’t do this, you may lose 225,418 visitors like we did on the KISSmetrics blog.

Extend your content

Updating your content is good, but making your popular posts more in-depth is even better. There are a few reasons for this:
  1. Content that is 2,000 or more words tends to rank better than content that is only 500 or even 1,000 words. This article talks about the fact that the average web page that ranks on page 1 of Google contains at least 2,000 words.
  2. Have you noticed that there is a section on Google called “in-depth articles”? By increasing your word count, assuming you aren’t just word-stuffing, you are more likely to get mentioned in that section of the search results page. You can see how I increased my search traffic by 13.15% in 30 days by leveraging this tip.
  3. Adding long-tail keywords to your article can boost your rankings for new terms. You just have to make sure you are adding in more content as you add in more keywords. That way you can blend them in naturally. I was able to increase my search traffic by 54,131 visitors by following the long tail steps in this blog post.

Adjust your post titles

Your post titles may be good, but why not make them great? Adjusting your titles can increase the number of people who click through to your site from search results pages.
A few years ago, I used Webmaster Tools to analyze Quick Sprout in order to see what words and phrases cause the highest click-through rates. What I found was interesting. The most clicked-through words tended to be:
  1. How to
  2. [List-related numbers]
  3. Free
  4. You
  5. Tips
  6. Blog post
  7. Why
  8. Best
  9. Tricks
  10. Great
By using some of those words within your title tags, you should see an increase in click-throughs.

Conclusion

Writing more content similar to your most popular posts isn’t enough. Why not try leveraging the 10 tactics above to get more traffic to your existing content?
It may require some work, but it’s a lot easier to make those changes than it is to continually crank out new blog posts.

6 Simple Strategies to Get Blog Posts Indexed by Google Quickly

In this article I offer some tips for writing blog posts that are geared up for search engine traffic, and that are written to be shared in the social web. For the example, I will be walking through how I create a real post for a high authority health web site.

I will also be creating a video to embed into the blog post, so I will explain how I created the video, came up with the title for it, and armed it for top results in the search engines.

If following along, be sure that when you create a video and article that they are able to stand alone as you never know how someone will be absorbing your content. It might be that they aren’t watching the video embedded within your post at all, but stand alone on YouTube or wherever it is that you decide to host it.

Watch over my shoulder as I perform the steps that I use to get blog posts and videos indexed by Google quickly

Let’s Use Google Suggest To Find A Good Topic For Our Blog Post

We’ll use the long tail we find within our post title

By default I head to Google.com to start, but if you are writing content for a specific geographic audience like Canada for example, you might want to go to the correct engine (Google.ca) because there will be some differences in the results, even if they are just subtle.

Also, you may want to disable the saving of search history for your Google Account, or log out of Google completely, because the search results may differ for you otherwise. We’ll be looking at top results to do a quick glance at the competition. It’s not a huge deal but it’ll help our testing to be a little more precise, but the truth is we are not dealing with exacts anyway. In case you didn’t know, Google will tailor your results (when search history is being saved), to show sites that you frequent most in the top results.

1) First, let’s decide on roughly what we want to talk about in our post.

In this example I am going to be providing a list and summary of Facebook pages in the “raw food” niche. I’m not sure how many just yet, maybe around 50, but I can work that part out later.

2) Next, let’s head to Google to see what people might be searching for that would like to see that list. There might be some deliberate searches for such a thing, but somehow I don’t think there will be much. Let’s look anyway.

Well, there wasn’t a whole lot.
I did find:
“raw food facebook pages”
“raw food diet facebook”
“raw food health facebook”
“raw food on facebook”
I also discoverd that commonly people might look for Facebook pages in this way:
“{topic-name} related facebook page”

So, even though “raw food related facebook pages” isn’t rolling up, it doesn’t mean it wouldn’t get traffic in the long or short term.

3) Finally, let’s assess the results that come up for each phrase.

For the search “raw food facebook pages” Google lists exactly what you may (or may not) expect. It lists pages on Facebook related to “raw food.”

You might think this removes the need for the content developer but I wouldn’t agree. I think that a nice list with that title will still climb above those results. It would be human edited instead of machine selected after all.

I looked through some of the other terms, and I decided to go for the first one.

What I am mainly looking for when assessing the results is if anyone has used that exact phrase in the title of their content.

While I will be using “raw food facebook pages” for the article, I will probably be using “raw food diet facebook” for the video.

Creating A Blog Post Title Using Our Chosen Google Suggest Keyphrase

Make a title worth clicking and sharing

OK, now with our chosen keyphrase in hand, let’s come up with a title.

The title is arguably the most important part of the content when it comes to getting clicks, SEO, and sharing.

It becomes the starting point, or the “advertisement” for the content piece when the snippet is viewed in the SERPS or after being shared on social sites like Facebook. The title also often determines what is included in other key SEO elements, which include the H1 tag and the URL.

List posts are great, and they are often shared without hesitation.

Knowing that, let’s create a “list post” style title from our chosen keyword.

Let’s go with:

“50 Impactful Raw Food Facebook Pages Worth Liking”

And for the video:

“50 Big-Wheel Raw Food Diet Facebook Pages”

Pay Attention To Some HTML Elements That Affect SEO

OK, with the title aside (an element that I find incredibly important), let’s take a look at some other important factors for SEO.

I personally don’t like shoehorning other keywords into the copy. If I stumbled across some during the title research phase that would work well for sub headings, then that’s one thing. To stress over getting a bunch of keywords and phrases in the content, I don’t bother with that for blog posts.
I think that the keywords happen naturally with the writing. It’s natural to mention related words while you are writing, isn’t it?

But here is what I do pay attention to:
  1. Use a version of your main keyphrase in the opening or introduction paragraph. It may also make sense in some cases to use the exact phrase in a sub heading or paragraph deeper within the article.
  2. Separate sections of the article with H2 (or perhaps H3) heading tags.
  3. Use strong and emphasis (em) tags throughout if it makes sense to.
  4. Include an image within the content. The filename and alt text of the image are important.
  5. Don’t be afraid to include links within the article. Links to external high authority sites, more information links, internal links, etc.

Make The Content Scannable With Info Packed Headlines

Many people like to just scan an article rather than read it all the way through. This might be enough for them to decide if they want to share the content or save it to read later. Also, they just may get enough from the headlines to know they don’t need to read that particular section.

Having really good headlines makes the scanning process simple. The headlines stand out. They should define the next block of content but still provide value on their own. Don’t be afraid to use lengthy headlines. They don’t always have to be short and sweet. Some people disagree with me here but I might even use a full sentence or two in a headline.

Also, providing lots of whitespace or breaking up an article with other elements like images and videos helps make the “job” of reading seem less daunting. People can read lots of words fast, more than most probably realize.

The problem is looking at a big wall or sea of text and feeling a little anxiety about it. If it’s all broken up nicely, it makes for a better, smoother read, and more likely for the person to stick around to consume it.

Even one, two or there sentences in a paragraph works.

But this of course makes it even more important to separate chunks of content with great sub headings.

Offer Lots Of Value, Lots Of Content For List Posts, And Mention Others To Increase The Possibility Of Shares, Likes, And Saves

This goes without saying by now. You need to provide the utmost value in every piece of content that you deliver.

Come at it like it’s your first day on the job and you want to impress and over deliver. Always overdeliver.

I set myself up with the task of finding 50 big-wheel or impactful raw food Facebook pages. Why? Because people will want to save it for later and share such a wonderful resource.

At the same time I am mentioning (and linking to) others which would in turn might get them to link back or share the content.

The folks that you mention can get alerted in various ways including:
  1. Pingbacks and trackbacks – when linking from WordPress to WordPress for example
  2. Google Alerts – anytime a name or phrase is found in Google SERPS a person can be alerted by email or other means
  3. Traffic monitoring – a person may see the referral traffic in their logs or analytics from your content
  4. @ mentions in Tweets – I use Paper.li to curate content and the tool auto-tweets a link to the current edition and @ mentions the featured content providers

A Few Tips For Ranking Videos – Use A Google Suggest Low Comp Long Tail In The Title And Description And Post To YouTube

YouTube video results often show up within regular results. I find that most people will target YouTube Suggest terms for their videos if they target any at all. And that’s fine.

I do find there is a lot of overlap, but we can at least get some love from the Google SERPS for our videos when using a Google Suggest keyphrase.

Since YouTube is an authority site on the web, that is a strong SEO factor in our favour out of the gate. So, using a low competiton term in the title, in the description, and versions of it in the tags often yields great ranking results, and sometimes within minutes.

I created a video the other day targeted to people looking for a specific type of real estate property in a specific location. The video ranked for the long tail 2 minutes later, probably sooner, it just took me that long before I checked.

Now, it used to make me cringe at the thought of creating videos, but I knew how important they were (and are). I played around with Animoto but that wasn’t as impactful as I hoped. I dabbled with on-screen videos but that’s just not my thing, something I will revisit later. So, now I create screencast videos.

Best of luck getting your content quickly ranked in the SERPS!

Creating Content, Establishing Blog and, Site Optimization

Hey there, Richard from richardsalingmarketing here again. So you want to blog and tell the world what you think because you believe you have a lot of value to share. That’s great. I imagine that you may want people to find you in order to read what ya have to say right? There is a lot to having a blog and getting it established. I hope you have tons of time. I don’t even write as much as I should, which is about 20 posts per month.

Through the years, I’ve learned a few things about online marketing and driving traffic. What I do for businesses is a lot different than what I do for my personal blog here. Mainly because of the resources and available time involved to perform indepth SEO. There is more to it than just puting up great content.

Yes it’s important to publish great content that adds value. That is just a very small part of the formula though. There are the backlinks, to and from other sites with domain authority. the syndication to the various social networks to strengthen the social signal which Google likes. There is also the technique of building a PBN (Private Blog Network); which could be considered black hat. Having a network and linking the sites together does not necessarily violate search engine guidelines. It depends on why you’re linking the sites together and if you’re using the links to influence search results (i.e. increasing your pagerank). So here are a couple of things to think about to perform SEO on your blog that are strictly whitehat SEO.

Tag! You’re Not It

Title Tags aren’t required in blogs as much as websites because search engines already crawl the page and see the title of the blog and you’re already ranking for the blog title. So you aren’t helping by having a title tag repeated. You don’t need to rank for it more than once.

Keywords in Meta tags used to be important as search engines had less ways to determine what a site is about. Now that technology is so advanced, search engines have better ways of determining rankings and relevance. I still like to put the keywords in there (for other search engines) and do this by enabling ‘dynamic’ keywords with the All in One SEO pack.

Getting Backlinks:

I won’t go into all of the ways that you can build links to your site as there are some great articles out there on the web already, but I will list some of my favorite methods:
  • Write Awesome Content – There’s nothing better than writing an article that gets tons of links from relevant bloggers. If you put enough work into your content and regularly engage with other bloggers in the niche, they’re going to link to your posts.

  • Guest Posts – I really like links from guest posts as they send traffic, they’re relevant, and you can usually customize the anchor text of the link to be anything you want. If you want to learn more about this method

  • Collaborate – Collaborating with other influencers in your niche is not only a great way to connect with more people, but it’s also a good way to get people talking about you. Oftentimes when I have interviewed people, they will link back to the interview from their own site. I also see people doing group projects which involve over 20 people and then end up having them all promote the one resource. If you can get other people involved, they’re going to help you spread the word.

  • Link Out – When you link out, people link back. I don’t recommend link exchanges or filling up your blog roll, but if you find something on another site that your audience might enjoy, don’t be afraid to share it. You never know, that big blog might just send their 5-figure audience your way.

Focus On a Keyphrase

Unless you’re really, heavily into branding, it’s a good idea to try to optimize your site around a keyphrase that can send you search traffic. Most blogs end up getting the majority of links to their homepage, so it’s a good idea to try and leverage those links by getting search engine rankings for a relevant phrase.

For me, I’m aiming to rank for the phrase ‘online marketing Scottsdale’. Although it is fairly competitive, it has a decent search volume and it’s relevant to what this site is about: helping small and medium size business get a better a ROI on social media and getting found as well as matching the offline customer experience with the message.

The first thing to do to get found online is to find keywords that have a high search volume as well as being relevant to your site. The Google external keyword tool is a good place to start to see which phrases are popular in your audience. Make sure you select ‘All Countries and Territories’ on the left and then ‘Exact match’ on the right hand side to get accurate results.

However that is NOT the only tool you should be using in order to find the best keyphrases for your WordPress Site. Here are 3 sites that help you find what your competitors are using:
  • keywordspy.com
  • keycompete.com
  • hexaTrack.com
Now use keyword research sites to expand your reach. If you intend on using Google AdWords to drive traffic then these keywords will be divided into your campaigns and adgroups. There are 3 other tools we can use in order to expand lists even further into multiples of cities, states, product names, artist, etc.
  • WordTracker.com
  • KeywordDiscovery.com
  • SpeedPPC.com
Once you have the keyphrases, you can use them in:
  • The title tag for your homepage
  • The heading of your site
  • Your logo
  • As anchor text in links from other websites
Just don’t over do it. Google doesn’t like stuffed pages. A good rule of thumb is approximately 20% of the article is filled with keywords you are working to get ranked for. With that, stick around 3-4 keywords so they have more weight and relevance in relating to a search query.

Index My Site With a SiteMap

If you are running a new site or one with only a handful backlinks pointing towards it, a sitemap can make a big difference in enabling Google to discover and index all of the relevant pages on your website.

In simple terms, a sitemap is simply a specifically formatted list of the pages on your site that you would like to be indexed by the search engines. You could create one manually if you like carrying out jobs that can be automated with ease. Otherwise I have a couple of suggestions:

Google XML Sitemaps: with over ten million downloads and an average rating of 4.7 out of 5, you can rest assured that this free plugin gets the job done.

WordPress SEO by Yoast: this free plugin has a number of SEO-related functions, one of which is an XML sitemap generator.

The process of building an updating a sitemap is almost entirely automated. You set a few options as you see fit then let the plugin do the rest. Google says that “[most] webmasters will benefit from sitemap submission, and in no case will you be penalized for it.” With that in mind, why wouldn’t you create a sitemap for your WordPress website?

That should be enough for now to get ya started. I’d love to read your

mozbar
If you are interested in link building, then this is one of the most convenient browser extensions you can get. MozBar lists important SEO metrics for each web page you visit, including domain authority, page authority, on-site HTML elements, and number of backlinks. It also allows you to highlight the types of links you’re interested in (dofollow, nofollow, internal, and external), as well as determine the website’s location, based on its IP address.
All of these features are available with the free version of MozBar. For $99 per month, you can create a standard Moz PRO account, which unlocks access to additional MozBar analytics features, but also to the entire Moz toolkit, including a mentions tool, a rank tracking tool, on-page keyword optimization, a keyword difficulty and SERP analysis tool, and more.

klout banner
This quirky app resorts to social media analytics to evaluate its users and measure their online social influence. The app then assigns a numerical value to that influence, called a “Klout score.”
Klout draws data from Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Wikipedia and Instagram to measure the size of a user’s social media circle, as well as their ability to drive action via the content they create.
It takes into account metrics such as retweets, follower counts, likes, subscriptions and memberships, and uses them to calculate social “outreach.” As a SEO tool, Klout can be used to measure your social media presence, and to better understand how your audience is responding to your content.
Although it is growing in popularity, Klout has also been criticized for producing “Klout scores” which can’t accurately represent one’s social influence. A famous example shows that according to Klout, US president Barrack Obama is less influential than a number of bloggers.

7. Ahrefs

ahref banner
Primarily useful for link research and link building, Ahrefs comes with a large index of links, detailed anchor text distribution charts, and a user friendly interface to boot. The tool updates every 15 minutes, and can show backlinks, domains, and the best pages of a domain.
Ahrefs can generate SEO reports that can help you spot mistakes in titles, headers, meta descriptions or meta keywords; or find broken pages and duplicate content. A mentions tracker allows you to keep an eye on mentions of your brand or other relevant terms.
While this is mostly a paid tool, some limited functionality is offered for free (mostly as a free trial). Three paid subscription levels are available: for a monthly fee of $79, the Professional package can check up to 5000 backlinks per request; for $179, the Elite package ramps that number up to 15,000; and for $499 per month, users can gain access to an enterprise-tier package which displays a whopping 30,000 links per request.

8. Majestic SEO

It offers a suite of useful competitive intelligence tools: a Site Explorer which provides URL/domain summary data, a keyword checker, a backlink history tool that shows the number of backlinks for a URL or domain, webmaster tools to verify the ownership of your domain, a wide range of standard and advanced reports, and much more.
Free services are offered to individual users who want to get data for the sites they own. Silver, Gold, and Platinum subscription levels are marketed toward SEO professionals and SEO agencies, starting from $29.99 per month, or $299.90 per year.

9. Social Crawlytics

social crawlytics banner
This is a nice competitive research web-based tool that can help you keep track of your competitors’ most shared content. It can quickly scan URLs to show you where your competitors’ content is being shared and promoted, and then compile useful social sharing metrics. Its intuitive dashboard makes it very easy to monitor, schedule and analyze those metrics.
Since this tool is free, you can jump right into using it if you have a Twitter handle and a URL to search. After you’ve tweaked the parameters of your search, all you have to do is provide an email address and Social Crawlytics will send you the report once it is compiled.
One of the most interesting features of the Social Crawlytics report is the Sunburst data graph, which “gives you a great visual view of how your shares are split up when approaching from a search engine’s point of view.”

10. Raven Tools

If you’re confused about the myriad of SEO toolkits out there, Raven is a great place to start because it offers a lot of features in one place. Its SEO toolset alone contains over a dozen great resources.
For example, it features two time-saving tools: Site Finder – which uses Bing data to quickly identify the best linking opportunities, and Backlink Explorer – which pulls out all the backlinks for a URL or domain (including nofollow links) and compiles a comprehensive report.
But this is just a fraction of what the Raven software can do. However, quality comes at a cost. While a 30-day trial is offered for free, for $99 per month, you get unlimited access to the entire Raven tools suite. Answer : Robot is such a Technology that provides the permission to specially search engine robots on the webpage. I mean, Robot allow or disallow to hovering/crawling (searching) search engine robots on specific page you want.
Suppose you want to crawl all the Page by search Engine robot then the Coding of robots.txt will be following
User-agent:*
Disallow:

It allow all access for robots on all page on your website

Suppose you wish that no any search engine robots crawl on your site because it is your private and secret Document on the website (Specially Any Company data based Website) then you should be use the following robot.txt coding
User-agent:*
Disallow: /

It prevents from robot to crawling on your all website page.

Now suppose you want to prevent to crawling specific page on your website then you should be use the following robots.txt coding

User-agent:*
Disallow: /Contact-Us/    (Contact-Us is you Page Name)

If you wish any other page also disallow (1,2 or more page)then you should be use the following Coding-

User-agent:*
Disallow: /Contact-Us.html/
Disallow: /About-Us.html/
Disallow: /Blog.html/

(.html is extension of page, if your page has other the use your page like About.aspx, or About.php or so on)

Note: It is Important that you have to use new line for disallow next page.
It is wrong method (Disallow: /Contact-Us/About-Us/Blog/) So don’t such coding.

Now if you wish to Only  Google Search Engine Robots crawl on your Website then in this Condition you will have to Use Google Robots.txt coding like the following ;
User-agent: Google
Disallow:

Note: I want to tell you one thing that Each And Every Search Engine has own Robots coding so better is that you Search in Google for their coding.. You get more online website tool to generate robots.txt file for different Search Engine. So I am sorry here that I can’t write each robots.txt coding.
